"In repurposed bullets beauty blooms. A speaker of harmony, a flower that booms.
With active listening, it is peace we empower, sustainable design our planet´s devoured.
Let this symbol of hope ring loud and clear, for a brighter tomorrow let us adhere."
Material: Wood, Brass (Bullets), Concrete, PLA
This speaker came to be during the course Product & Form, led by designer Simo Puintila, at Aalto University. He challenged the students to develop their repertoire of visual design principles and aesthetics and therefore, this designer-artist responded with:
Finding inspiration in the Brutalist philosophy and aesthetics of Modernist Georgia O’Keeffe, I sought to create a speaker that values liberty, reason, and harmony in times of conflict and distress found at the borders. Breaking out of the prejudice of aggression, I express rediscovered masculinity by making _____, which blossoms instead of booms. The work acts as a contemporary call for people, regardless of social identity, to “Ink Peace” and evolve harmoniously towards “Poetic Justice”.
Design to disarm, actively listen, and empower.
Is that a virtue Genelec might grow?
The speaker was materialized by repurposing bullet blanks as a design for peace. The explorer found these in an abandoned kindergarten in Lauttasaari, Helsinki, during a research trip in November 2022. The flower-shaped object symbolizes awakening and thus moves away from the archetypal association of aggression, power, and violence found within a bullet. Therefore, he encourages any individual to find themselves the freedom to leave their mark through sound. Creating a safe space to be ____.
