The Scarab is a steel frame and leather chair. Its purpose is to embody an experiment of limits of material characteristics. The scarab chair was inspired by a fascination for structures that express tension.
Purposely selecting leather to stabilise the four legs of the scarab, I challenged the material to keep a steady posture while experiencing rough use. This non-conventional method makes the chair adjustable and flexible.
Expressing tension inside wire-frame steel was more complex than creating leather belts. But by welding the tops and bottoms of the front legs separately, I expressed release and stress that can also be found in human muscles.
The final result is a chair for comfortable user relaxation while expressing embodied tension.
